Seven Days Of Footballing Winners And Losers

Compiled by Pete Gill

IT'S BEEN A GOOD WEEK FOR...
Manchester United They've barely got out of second gear all season, but recapturing both the Premiership title and the European Cup is a growing possibility.

Tony Adams Successful, and inspirational, return to the Gunners' line-up against Southampton was made all the better when Alan Shearer announced his intention to retire from the international scene after Euro 2000. His privately held belief that he should be England's captain again could well become a reality.

Aberdeen After the worst start to a season in the history of the Scottish Premier League, the Dons are now not only three points clear of bottom club Kilmarnock, but also remain on course for a double cup success. As comebacks go, it's been pretty damn impressive.

Nicolas Anelka The £23m striker has finally scored his first league goal for Real Madrid. And in a win over hated rivals Barcelona too!

AND IT'S BEEN A GREAT WEEK FOR...
Matt Elliott A recall for Scotland is simply inevitable after he scored both of Leicester's goals in the Worthington Cup Final win over Tranmere. The only question is whether Craig Brown will play the Foxes' captain in attack. Considering the other options and Elliott's goal-scoring form, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

IT'S BEEN A BAD WEEK FOR...
Lee Bowyer He probably didn't think his finishing could get much worse after that miss against Manchester United. But it did as he saw chance after chance stay out in a 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough.

£12,000 According to full-of-himself Don Hutchison, Everton's offer of that sum as a weekly wage is a "disgrace". There are a lot of things that are indeed disgraceful - Hutchison's comments among them.

Alan Shearer Very few people fell for the outgoing England striker's 'I want to spend more time with my family' line. Professional footballers have more spare time on their hands than a watch salesman, so why doesn't he just admit that he knows he's not good enough any more?

Chelsea A somewhat fortunate 2-1 win over bottom club Watford in the league doesn't come close to making up for a sloppy defeat and reputation-sullying crowd trouble in Marseille.

AND IT'S BEEN A TERRIBLE WEEK FOR...
Dundee As miserable weeks come, they don't get much worse than the one which the Dens Park club have endured. Last Wednesday they lost at home 3-1 to Aberdeen. On Sunday, they were thrashed 7-1 by Rangers in their own back yard. Three days later, they lost 6-2 at Celtic. Played three, lost three, scored four, conceded 16 - has any team ever had a worse seven days of football than that?
