The Numbers That Matter In The Build-Up To The European Footy Championship

Compiled by Pete Gill

0 The number of major international tournaments England have won since 1966 and also the number they've won away from England. Figures that both explain why we are all so desperate to see Keggy and the boys succeed in the Low Countries and also suggest we're not going to.

1 The number of times Italy have been European champions. That figure is likely to remain unchanged following the withdrawal of the injured Christian Vieri which leaves their attacking largely dependent on Alessandro del Piero, a man who has scored just once from open play in the last 19 months.

2 The number of players who have appeared in all 13 of Kevin Keegan's matches as England boss. The men in question are (predictably) skipper Alan Shearer and, er, Phil Neville. Heaven help us.

3 The number of players in the Turkey squad who play their domestic football for clubs not based in the mother country: Muzzy Izzet (Leicester City), Tugay Kerimoglu (Glasgow Rangers) and Tayfun Korkut (Real Sociedad).

4 The number of England players (David Beckham, Paul Ince, Paul Scholes, David Batty) to be sent off in the past two years after only four more had been given their marching orders in the previous 30 years. With stats like that, you've got to think we can expect yet more red card shame this summer.

5 The number of players from Real Madrid's European Cup winning squad who made Spain's final 22: keeper Iker Casillas, defenders Michel Salgado, Ivan Helguera and Fernando Hierro and striker Raul. Conspicous by his absence was veteran striker Fernando Morientes - national coach Jose Antonio Camacho was unimpressed by his form last season.

6 The total number of matches the eventual finalists will play at this tournament. Discounting the possibility of 'winning' a game (or more) on penalties, the champions may have to win as few as four matches. Easy, eh? Unfortunately for England, Keegan has won just six times in his 13 matches - and that includes 'triumphs' over Luxembourg and Malta.

7 The number of Premiership based players in the French squad: Fabien Barthez (Manchester United), Marcel Desailly, Frank Leboeuf, Didier Deschamps (all Chelsea), Emmanuel Petit, Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry (all Arsenal).

8 The number of Premiership based players representing Norway this summer: Thomas Myhre (Everton), Henning Berg, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (both Manchester United), Vegard Heggem, Stig Inge Bjornebye (both Liverpool), Eirik Bakke (Leeds), Tore Andre Flo (Chelsea), Steffen Iversen (Tottenham).

9 The number of players in Germany's squad who are aged 30 and above. Nine is also the number of players named in Romania's squad who were part of the team that beat England at France 98.

10 The number of qualifying matches the Czech Republic won on their way to Euro 2000, a 100% record that makes them many a pundit's dark horses this summer.

11 The number of European Championship tournaments there will have been once Euro 200 kicks-off.

13 The number of referees (down 11 at Euro 96) who will be in charge of all the matches at Euro 2000. Graham Poll is representing England.

14 The number of players in Yugoslavia's squad whose names end in 'vic' (don't be surprised if John Motson and pals cheer their elimination).

31 The total number of matches that will be played in the tournament over a 22 day period.

35 The number of countries that will have taken part in European Championship finals once both Slovenia and Norway have made their bow for the first time.

48 The number of Serie A based players selected for Euro 2000.

50 The number of Spanish Primera Liga based players selected for Euro 2000.

61 The number of Premiership based players selected for Euro 2000.

30,000 The number of people who will be crammed inside the Stade Pays-de-Charleroi to see England take on Germany, and also - hopefully - the first English victory over the Germans in a competitive match since 1966.
