BERTI FOR THE VALLEY

Charlton are set to sign former Italy and Tottenham midfielder Nicola Berti on a non-contract basis. Berti, 32, will make his debut for the Addicks in next Monday's first-team friendly against Welling, provided he receives international clearance.

The former Inter Milan and Tottenham player, who made 39 appearances for his country, is currently a free agent after leaving Spanish club Deportivo Alaves in the summer. Berti joined Inter - with whom Charlton recently struck up a player exchange deal - in 1988 and won two UEFA Cups with the San Siro side.

Charlton hope to use the match against Welling, and next Wednesday's reserve team match against Arsenal, to assess Berti's fitness before considering a permanent deal.
